Paul Goydos, 54, is playing in the Hoag Classic at Newport Beach Country Club this week. It’s a rare home game, since he lives at Dove Canyon. On Wednesday night he watched Long Beach State, his alma mater, play basketball, just down the street from Wilson, his old high school and one of the places where he was a substitute teacher.
He won twice on the PGA Tour. He has won five times among the gray sideburns, has banked more than $5 million, has qualified for the Schwab Cup Championship five consecutive times, and was 12th on the tour points list last year.
